Meta has opened its Spatial Computing SDK to all registered developers, enabling third-party applications to build AR social features that run natively on Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses and the forthcoming Orion AR headset. The SDK allows developers to build shared AR environments, spatial notifications, and "social layers" that can be overlaid onto the physical world and shared between nearby Meta device users.
The company has been quietly building toward this moment for three years, acquiring seven AR-related companies and filing over 900 spatial computing patents since 2022. The SDK launch is the first concrete evidence that the infrastructure is ready for third-party use.
